Polyglactin (Vicryl) is another braided synthetic 'Polymeric suture which retains its integrity for a long time in tissue. It is ideal for bowel anastomoses, tying of ligatures and closure of dead space in wounds. It handles as well as catgut, and knots are secure because of its braid. 'Mere are several other polymeric synthetic absorbables, such as polydioxanone and polycarbonate, which have been used in monofilament form for abdominal wall closure. These sutures can also be used for buried subcuticular skin closure, thereby avoiding the need for suture removal. There is a risk of minor infection or wound leakage in contaminated surgery.
