These staplers are used for closure of tubular structures ie bowel, which require end to end anastomosis.

The single/double row of staples are held in a circular cartridge. Then activated, the staples penetrate the two layers of tissue, and the ends are turned when they reach the other side. A circular knife then cuts the excess tissue, creating a circular lumen between the two viscera.
